NATO Through The Years | NATO Documentary | 2024
NATO is the world’s most successful political-military alliance. Over 75 years, it has managed to withstand challenges, expand its roles and mission and even grow significantly in size. But how has it persisted so long, and how has time and tribulation changed the organisation?
From the day it was founded in 1949 to the reinforcement of Eastern Europe in 2022, this documentary explores the moments that define the Organisation today, through the eyes and personal experiences of people who have witnessed these pivotal moments from the unique perspective of ‘insiders’, as former NATO staff.
During the Cold War, NATO successfully deterred the Soviet Union from aggression against Western Europe. In the 1990s, NATO helped to end ethnic conflicts in the Western Balkans. After the terrorist attacks against the United States on 9/11, it measured up to its purpose, invoking Article 5, the founding treaty’s collective defence clause, for the first time, and mobilising to defend Allies against further terrorist violence. And when Russia launched its brutal, full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, NATO rushed troops to Eastern Europe, assuring Allies of their safety while deterring further aggression from Russia.
In 2024, NATO is larger and more powerful - politically and militarily - than it was in 1949. Yet for all that has changed, it remains committed to its core goal of collective defence.

    Interesting to learn about what knowledge they had on Belgium at the time. Not surprising that they don't mention the atrocities occurring in the Congo and to the Congolese people. I think we are still a long way off any of it being common knowledge. Even today it's being swept under the rug. I still love my country despite our dark past and present because I see the social change that is occurring and I hope it continues on and we acknowledge all the victims. I feel the same way about. this country of my ancestors. Belgium is a fascinating place. Thanks for sharing.

    What's interesting is how much the documentary emphasized the hopelessness of being the weaker side, the losses, the screw-ups, the potential losing to the enemy. The bit with the soldier in the chopper yelling "we lost 3/4 of our unit!". I can't tell if it is the malaise/anti-war attitude from the Vietnam War affecting how they edited it, a dislike of the idea of WW3 generally, or something else, but you can see a stark difference from a few years later in the Reagan era, where there was still the tenseness of the consequences, but it was more big smiles/we're tough/we're back!/we'll fight & win despite being the underdog attitude showing through.

      I mean until the mid-late 80s nato forces were actually pretty outclassed by the Soviets in a ground war. But I suppose the footage also shows what the reality of war would have been. Had ww3 kicked off it would have been even more devastating than ww2 was

  • @MM22966
    @MM22966 3 місяці тому

    I wonder what was going through the soldier's minds, practicing for this? You can see in their faces it was a lot more 'real' than most exercises nowadays, with hundreds of thousands of enemy troops within driving distance. This was about the weakest point in the Cold War for the Western Alliance. Budgets were down because of the Oil Crisis earlier in the decade, America was battered, bruised, and confused from the Vietnam War's loss, NATO was not thinking/arming seriously for a conventional war yet, and the Soviets & Warsaw Pact's gear was nearly equal in quality at this point, with none of the dissolution/loss of confidence the 80's would bring. Another case of nuclear weapons saving people's lives, because in any other period of history, the Soviets probably WOULD have gone for it, and World War III would have happened. But because MAD is a thing, it would be pointless to fight conventionally when everything would be blown up if they 'won'.
